Especially valuable was the material on national costume and embroidery. This was a kind of discovery: no one imagined that art, rooted in olden times, not only survived, but also actively lives in the works of today’s folk masters … We publish a story by one of the expedition members.

That memorable summer turned out to be extremely dry and sultry in Khakassia. Every morning on the desert streets of Kaibala, on the occasion of the heat, several people appeared with large folders and bags, where there were pencils, brushes, paints, albums. The ubiquitous boys greeted them, and each tried to show in which house old clothes, an embroidered pouch or a pipe with incrustation are kept.
The Khakass Autonomous Region, part of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, is located in the west of the Minusinsk Basin, one of the most fertile places in Southern Siberia. It has a relatively mild climate, sunny days are frequent. The Yenisei and its tributaries abound in fish, in the mountain taiga thickets there are many animals and birds. Places are rich in minerals, and primarily iron, copper, gold, silver, tin. Therefore, people settled here a very long time and quickly created a developed culture.

Like many other peoples, the most beautiful outfits in Khakassia are women. The basis of the costume is a dress. It is wide, free, long to toe. This is understandable, because shoulder pads and cuffs are the main decorative elements: embroidery is placed here. The ornament is usually geometric. The drawing of his beads is well arranged, and it is unlikely that you will find two completely identical compositions.
Like the floral pattern, this is a borrowing from the traditional costume of the Russian population, with which Khakassians live side by side for several centuries.
Another difference is the general relaxed dress color. The shades of one red can be discerned there not less than a dozen: cinnabar, scarlet, cherry, terracotta, brownish …

On the head of a Khakass woman, she often waved – a woolen shawl like Pavlov’s. Each Khakaska can skillfully tie it, turning it into an authentic end to the outfit.

Yes, surprisingly, but the fact: the oldest crafts live in Khakassia to this day. And it is very good that in some schools, urban and rural, they are taught boys and girls. Classes are conducted by experienced masters, including MF Kyzhinaeva, IE Kurbezhekov, MI Dorin; they themselves perfectly master all the techniques of craft and skilfully transfer them to schoolchildren. All this pleases. In any case, it is impossible for beauty to leave everyday life.
