A master was born in Bai-Taiga, which is famous not only for the amazing stone agalmatolite, from which the Tuvans cut their small masterpieces, but also as a kind of cultural environment that has grown many famous artists. Like most of the local boys, Hertec was addicted to carving as a child. From the bark of poplar and cedar churks created funny figures of people and animals. I really wanted to capture the surrounding native beauty, to hear the approval of respected people! .. But I could not get an art education – I worked as a veterinary doctor for thirty years, giving all my free time to sculpture. Rural intellectual, an original artist of great culture, he became one of the organizers of the Union of Artists of the Tuva ASSR.
Until his last days, Herteck Koshtaiovich lived in his native Kyzyl-Dag – closer to nature and the characters of his works. The artist’s sharpness, the sense of form and plasticity of the body, based on years of study of animals, help to convey in a small static sculpture a certain mood, the character of the beast, its constant readiness for movement.

Springy muscles of legs and trunk, flexible lines of back and neck, heavy diadem of horns – and here is a mountain goat – serge. The very embodiment of power is ferocious sarlyk, as they are called in Yakiv in Tuva. A real beast from the legend perceives the beast Arzylan – these can not be found in the Gobi desert, hidden somewhere beyond the ridges of the mountains. And it’s strange: every sculpture that can fit in the palm of your hand looks majestic and monumental! Individual figures of shepherds, “Khuresh” wrestlers, Tuvans in national clothes are also unique.
Each master has a special stone. Taibuhaa’s favorite stone was a golden-reddish, reddish, with a transition from sunset pink to gray. The sculptor did not hurry – he will choose the material and let him lie down. Only then the workpiece is cut easily, the tool goes smoothly. Naturally and simply the forms of the future work come to life, as if they are born of the accumulated and experienced ones. Sometimes for a week, and if the work goes on soon, and even faster, the miniature sculpture is ready.

You look at it and you think: in order to confidently and accurately embody the imaginative images of the world around us, it is necessary to grow among these mountains and valleys, to become one of the herdsmen and farmers, as the artist Hertek Toibuhaa. Become the son of your people.
