Painting of Turkmenistan
The art of easel painting of Turkmenistan is very young. It was born only as a result of victory of the Great October. This republic had no tradition in such sphere. Thus the way of confirmation in were not easy. First steps were made rather timidly, and by quality they did not correspond to demands of life. Primitivism of idea, crafty solution of a problem and then formalism and stylization—all this was to be passed through by the eldest generation of painters of republic.
Tremendous development of economics during the first years of five- year’s plans, the Great Patriotic War, after—war socialistic constructions have put before the painters new problems—to reflect more fully and more brightly life of people in all its numerous forms. A great creative charge have given to the artists the resolutions of the government on ideologic problems, especially the decisions of XX and XXI Congresses of CP of USSR, assays and speeches of N. S. Khrushchev about the literature and art, about their close connection with life.
Leading place in Turkmenia was occupied and still is by the easel painting, and in particular its life-depicting character. It is not casual. This very character, as no other one, gives the artist the possibility to become nearer to life, to penerate its essence and in this manner to reveal and to fix basic tendencies of its consecutive movements.
The artists have understood and clarified very well what does the people want from them. In search of themes and images of our contemporary people, they began to visit some enterprises of industry and transport, some ko’.choses and sovchoses, some big constructions. As a result of a large connection with heroes of our time a number of interesting by idea, and very successful by execution works about the oil workmen of Nebit-Dag, and chemists of Cara-Bogas Gol, builders of Kara-Kum canal, and fishers the Caspian Sea, “chabans” (pastors) of flocks, and cotton-growers of Murgab valley.

Growth of creative mastership, completion of army of painters on account of talented youth—graduated from Moscow and Leningrad high schools and also Ashkhabad Art school have permitted to embrace more largely the life of republic, to make use of all the different forms and characters of graphic art. During last years, together with successes in portraits landscapes, still-life, artists have created a number of interesting, marked in maturity canvasses on historic and historic-revolutionary themes, graphic art has become more animated and promises to be fruitful.
In “Album of Selected Works of Painters of Turkmenistan” are included a number of most interesting works of this character.
Rise of graphic art in republic, coming of the best canvasses on the All-Union scene naturally shall attract mass interest.
Bright testimony is the crescent flow of excursionists to the Museum of graphic arts, to the periodically organized graphic exhibitions. But, to satisfy aesthetic demands of working people by expositions in museums and exhibitions is not possible. Here publication of reproduction of pictures takes a great significance.
First such step was made by editors of “Sovietsky hudozhnik” and Turkmengosizdat in 1955. A series of cards “Graphic art of Soviet Turkmenistan” was issued. Two years later (1957) editors of “Sovietsky hudozhnik” had issueud a mass edition of an article and an album “Graphic Art of Turkmen SSR”. On materials of All-Union Art exhibition dedicated to 40 years of Great October Socialist Revolution the editors of “Sovietsky hudozhnik” have issued a series of post-cards “Graphic Art of Turkmen SSR” and, as a separate edition, two names of reproductions in colours. Albums, post-cards, reproductions have given much opening to the masterpieces of artists of republic, to the large people, but they are far from satisfying their demands for artistic productions.
Edition of coloured reproductions of selected works undertaken by Turkmengosizdat comprises for the first time more completely creative works of the artists of republic.
Compilers strived to include in album all the most significant by mastership and ideal fulfilment works. Some of interesting works were not placed in album because they were issued previously in series of coloured reproductions.
