Temporal rings

Temporal rings or Serpentine – very famous for the ancient Slavs decoration items, which at the same time were amulets and charms. Varieties of species of temporal rings are great and are found no less than lunnits. Temporal rings are women’s ornaments that are woven into the hair of the temples. Often there were several of them, the number reached six or more. Find bronze, silver, gold items.

Often the beads were strung on beads – amber, glass, stone, and once the archeologists got even a cherry stone. They are found almost all over the world, beginning with the layers of the Bronze Age. Some were found even during the excavation of the legendary Troy. But the largest number was found on the territory of ancient Rus of the VIII-XII centuries. Therefore, it is the Slavs who are credited with the special flourishing of such ornaments. They are found both in village barrows and in large cities.

Jewelry at that time had just two purposes. The first is beauty, and that is why women have always had much more jewelry and various pendants, rings, earrings, etc., than men. To a woman in ancient times treated with almost awe and quite differently than in the subsequent Christian period, where a woman was called an unclean and dirty creature. In ancient times, a woman is not only a woman in labor who must bear and raise her descendants, but also a priestess in the temples, a responsible mother, guardian of magic, a prototype of the Mother of the Raw Earth in human form. The second is a ritual and religious meaning.

Ochelier – temporal rings

In ancient Russia there was a belief that evil spirits can affect any person, if he is not protected by special amulets. The body is always protected with a shirt, a dress with embroidered symbols on it, wristlets on the wrists, necklaces on the neck, a special bandage on the forehead, and whiskey, like a naked place, is a tidbit for any bad manifestation of Navi – it was protected by such rings. Unfortunately, the term used to refer to these ornaments as amulets in ancient times did not reach our days, and their name is only a definition of the scientists that carried them around the temples. From some sources (Dictionary of Dahl, church lists), we can assume that the temporal rings were called “Assortment” – ear jewelery, earring, ear plug.

As already mentioned, excavations have revealed a great variety of temporal rings. However, the most widely used wire rings (most likely because of its cheapness and ease of manufacture). Also, in view of the temporal rings in antiquity, it was very easy to distinguish representatives of different tribes; and the position of the girl / woman in society. The wire rings were of small diameter with the ends twisted in loops. Also, head rings, on which pendants in the form of grapevines were attached, were widely distributed; two- and three-bead rings; seven-beam, bracelet-shaped. All rings are divided into several types: wire, bead, shield, ray, lobed.

Seven rays, like others, are divided into several subspecies: Temporal rings with a smooth scutellum or classical, Temporal rings with an arch on the scutellum and with five denticles along the upper edge of the scutellum, Temporal rings with shamrock-shaped rays and ornamented scutellum or Desninian appearance. Radial and lobed ornaments were cast.

Shield and Rhombuschite rings are most often found on the territories of the settlement of the Ilmen Slovenes. Bronze rings, where there are thickenings in the form of diamonds from 2 to 5 pieces. Made from wire, which was unzipped into plates. Over time, the patterns on the flaps changed and this helped archaeologists and historians to determine how the tribes were settled. Often there are delicate and very filigree works of ancient Slavic craftsmen.
Kudrevatye and lunnice-shaped (lunnitic) temporal rings. Lunnitsobraznye absorbed themselves as elements of curly rings, and female jewelry, which were called Lunnits.

Temporal rings

Scientists say that such jewelry is not originally Slavic. Long before that, they were used throughout Europe, in Scandinavia and Byzantium. The Slavs, sometimes encountering other nations, eventually adopted jewelry themselves. And yet, the temporal rings used by our ancestors are very different from the rings of other peoples, since they gave them a special individuality, taking into account their beliefs and traditions. By the 8th century these rings were already considered to be typically Slavic ornaments.
In most cases, as the researchers believe, the temporal rings are woven into the hair, but also hung up to the corolla – the maiden headdress. In addition, from the rings were made whole necklaces, which framed the whole head or were threaded on the strap and girdled the head. In the case when the temporal rings were attached to the headdress, they were not near the temple, but at the level of the ears and as if covered them. In some places such products were even inserted into the earlobe, like earrings.
